About

ARISE lab members
In the Antiracism, Resistance, Identity, Socialization, and Equity (ARISE) Lab, run by Dr. Annabelle Lin Atkin, we study the race-related development of diverse youth.  Our mission is to understand how race-related factors, such as racial-ethnic socialization (i.e., communicating about race, ethnicity, and culture), play a role in promoting positive development, which includes identity development, mental health, and critical racial consciousness. Critical racial consciousness involves awareness of racism, beliefs that one can affect change, and engagement in activism to address racial inequity.

For example, one line of work in the lab examines how resistance and resilience to racism and discrimination are developed through familial racial-ethnic socialization, or messages from parents and family about race, ethnicity, and culture. We seek to investigate how racial-ethnic socialization can help youth cope with racism, and inform strong racial identities and a commitment to antiracism and equity. We primarily focus on Asian American and Multiracial populations ranging from adolescence (ages 14-18) to emerging adulthood (ages 18-29), and parents of Asian American and Multiracial youth.
